Where it came from
Shigeki, Jukai Visionary was introduced as part of the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty set in 2022, marking a return to the fan-favorite Japanese-inspired plane. The design concept bridges the original Kamigawa block's deep roots in Shinto-inspired nature spirits with the newer, cyberpunk-inflected aesthetic of the set. Shigeki represents this evolution, depicted as a guardian of the Jukai Forest who utilizes the plane's 'channel' mechanic to bridge the gap between graveyard resource management and ramp strategies.
The illustrative work for this specific promo variant emphasizes the blend of traditional organic forms and neon-drenched technology characteristic of the Neon Dynasty aesthetic. This particular version was released as a promotional card, distinguished by its unique set symbol and collector numbering, reflecting the visual identity of the Kamigawa revisit. It was well-received by players for its technical utility in Commander formats, as it offers a repeatable way to recur spells while advancing land counts.
