Provenance

Where it came from

The Jinxed Ring debuted in the 1998 Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering, a set designed to complement the mechanics introduced in the preceding Tempest release. It emerged during a period when Wizards of the Coast was experimenting with 'hoser' cards and artifacts that carried significant risks for the controller, forcing players to calculate whether the utility of an effect justified the potential for self-sabotage.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic figures in the game’s early visual identity. Rush utilized his characteristic bold linework and vibrant, high-contrast palette to depict the cursed jewelry, aiming to convey a sense of impending misfortune that mirrored the card’s mechanical drawback of shifting control between players.
