Where it came from
Jolene, the Plunder Queen was introduced in the Streets of New Capenna Commander set, released in 2022. The character Jolene is depicted as a powerful figure within the Cabaretti, one of the five crime families that control the art deco-inspired metropolis of New Capenna. This set marked a stylistic departure for Magic: The Gathering, leaning heavily into a 1920s noir-meets-fantasy aesthetic characterized by jazz-age opulence and industrial grit.
The card’s design reflects the Cabaretti family’s focus on treasure creation and aggressive board presence. Illustrators for the set were tasked with capturing the distinct gilded, opulent visual language of New Capenna, blending traditional high fantasy motifs with the elegant geometry of the era. The promo version, collector number 73p, served as a specialized release for the set, intended to offer players a distinct visual variant for their commander decks.
