Where it came from
Turf War was released as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set in 2022, a collection centered on the art deco-inspired, crime-syndicate-run metropolis of New Capenna within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The card features a unique art treatment specific to the Commander product line, designed to reflect the gritty, turf-focused power dynamics of the city’s five rival families as they vie for control over the magical resource known as Halo.
The illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work often explores dramatic tension and character-driven compositions. In this piece, the artist emphasizes the atmospheric, noir-influenced aesthetic of the set, utilizing sharp contrasts and stylized lighting to capture the essence of a street-level standoff. Upon its release, the card was integrated into preconstructed deck lists, becoming a notable inclusion for players looking to capitalize on aggressive board control strategies.
