Where it came from
Journey to Eternity // Atzal, Cave of Eternity was released in early 2018 as part of the Rivals of Ixalan set for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a double-faced enchantment that transforms into a land, it reflects the block's focus on exploration and the legendary struggle between the various factions inhabiting the plane of Ixalan. The card depicts a ritualized transition between life and death, capturing the Mesoamerican-inspired aesthetic that defined the set's visual identity.
The artwork was illustrated by Lucas Graciano, who focused on conveying the sense of depth and mystical transition inherent in the card's mechanics. Within the competitive landscape, it was received as a highly unique utility piece, valued for its ability to generate significant card advantage in graveyard-centric strategies. As a promotional version, this specific iteration features unique border treatments that distinguish it from the standard pack-inserted cards of the time.
