Where it came from
Mastermind's Acquisition was introduced in the Rivals of Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in early 2018. Designed as a versatile black spell, the card allows players to search their library or sideboard for any card, reflecting the cunning and opportunistic nature of the set's pirate-themed narrative. The promo version, numbered 77p, features unique alternate art and a distinct foil treatment, marking it as a special reward distributed through Friday Night Magic events and other organized play initiatives.
The card's mechanics were crafted by Wizards of the Coast design teams to provide strategic depth, particularly in the Commander and Standard formats where accessing a 'wish' effect can fundamentally shift the state of a game. The illustration for this specific promo iteration highlights the dark, ornate aesthetic prevalent in the Ixalan plane's Treasure map themes. It was well-received by players for its tactical utility and remains a sought-after collectible for those who favor the distinct visual identity of limited-release promotional cards.
