Where it came from
Junji, the Midnight Sky was introduced as part of the Neon Dynasty Art Series, which highlights the distinct aesthetic direction of the Magic: The Gathering set set in the cyberpunk-inspired Kamigawa plane. This card features a reimagined illustration of the elder dragon Junji, moving away from traditional fantasy tropes to embrace the neon-drenched, high-tech fusion of Japanese folklore and futuristic urban decay that defined the 2022 expansion.
The art was created by illustrator Ikkei Nakamura, who leaned into the dark, ethereal nature of the character while utilizing a high-contrast palette to suit the set's technological theme. These cards were distributed as collector items meant to emphasize the standalone beauty of the artwork, often appearing in non-playable, borderless formats that allow the player to appreciate the intricacies of the digital brushwork without the clutter of standard game text.
