Where it came from
Juntu Stakes was released in 2000 as part of the Invasion expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the Invasion set marked the beginning of a major storyline arc known as the Invasion block, which depicted the multi-planar war between the forces of Dominaria and the Phyrexians. The card serves as a representative piece of the set's focus on multicolored mechanics and the desperate struggle against the encroaching mechanical horror of the Phyrexians.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Heather Hudson, whose work defined much of the aesthetic during this era of Magic. She aimed to capture the visceral, dark fantasy atmosphere of the storyline, depicting the defensive tools used against the Phyrexians. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, if niche, piece of equipment within the game’s meta, reflecting the broader design philosophy of the era that prioritized thematic resonance alongside strategic utility.
