Junún Efreet

Junún Efreet was released in 1993 as part of Arabian Nights, the very first expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to capture the flavor of the One Thousand and One Nights, introducing a distinct Middle Eastern aesthetic to the burgeoning game. The card itself was created as a rare creature, utilizing a mechanics-heavy design common to early sets where high-risk, high-reward abilities were meant to balance the power of early summons.

The card’s artwork was provided by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and iconic early contributors to the game’s visual identity. Rush’s design for the Efreet utilized his signature style of vibrant, ink-forward fantasy illustration to depict the mythological entity.
