Where it came from
Keeper of the Sacred Word was released in 2004 as part of the Unhinged expansion, the second satirical silver-bordered set produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed to explore unconventional mechanics and meta-humor that could not be featured in standard, tournament-legal play, providing a lighthearted break from the game's more serious lore and competitive structures.
The card features artwork by Greg Staples, who utilized a distinct, somewhat whimsical aesthetic to match the playful nature of the Unhinged set. As a rare card within this expansion, it reflects the creative team's desire to experiment with unconventional card triggers, aiming to reward players for their linguistic awareness during gameplay rather than just their strategic resource management.
