Where it came from
Keeper of the Sacred Word was released in 2004 as part of the Unhinged expansion, a satirical set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was intended to break the conventions of standard play through humor and meta-commentary, allowing the game designers to explore mechanics that would be impossible within the strict rules of professional competition.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the game's most iconic early illustrators. His contribution to Unhinged helped define the set's whimsical aesthetic, which relied heavily on puns and breaking the fourth wall. While the card is not a tournament-legal piece, it remains a beloved artifact among collectors for its nostalgic reflection of the irreverent spirit that characterized the early 2000s era of Magic expansions.
