Where it came from
Gleemax is a unique card from the Unhinged set of Magic: The Gathering, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2004. As part of an 'un-set,' the card is designed to exist outside the boundaries of standard tournament legality, serving instead as a tongue-in-cheek meta-commentary on the game's development and corporate identity. The name refers to a fictional, ego-driven supercomputer that Wizards of the Coast briefly used as a brand mascot for its online gaming portal during the mid-2000s.
The card was illustrated by Adam Rex, who captured the absurdist tone of the expansion with a depiction of a floating, monolithic brain. Mechanically, the card was designed to reflect the sheer power Gleemax claimed to possess, allowing players to control all their opponents' permanents. While it is fundamentally a joke card intended for casual play, it remains a notable artifact of the creative freedom granted to designers when working on parody expansions.
