Where it came from
Kellan, Daring Traveler // Journey On was released in late 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. As a double-faced card, it serves as a central narrative piece for Kellan, a character introduced earlier in the Wilds of Eldraine set as he embarks on an interplanar quest to find his father. The design integrates the game's transformation mechanic, reflecting the thematic evolution of the character as he shifts from a hopeful adventurer into a traveler deeply embedded in the mysterious, subterranean landscape of Ixalan.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured Kellan’s transition through a distinct shift in perspective and environmental tone between the front and back faces. The design aesthetic draws heavily from the pulpy, mesoamerican-inspired adventure motifs central to the Ixalan setting. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its utility in 'adventure' archetype decks, effectively serving as a bridge between the set's mechanical identity and the ongoing multi-set story arc that defines contemporary Magic: The Gathering lore.
