Where it came from
Kellan, Daring Traveler // Journey On was released as part of the promotional suite for the 2023 Magic: The Gathering set, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. The card features an alternate art style specific to this promotional release, designed to highlight the character's role as a planes-walking adventurer exploring the deep, subterranean biomes of Ixalan. The design focus was on capturing a sense of discovery and mythological wonder, reflecting the set's pulp-adventure aesthetic which draws inspiration from classic hollow-earth tropes.
This particular card is a double-faced creature card, a mechanic that mirrors the narrative journey of Kellan as he transitions from a traveler into a more seasoned explorer. The artwork was commissioned to integrate seamlessly with the set's overall visual language of neon-infused flora and ancient, forgotten civilizations. It was distributed through organized play channels and collector boosters, receiving positive feedback from players for its utility in limited formats and its contribution to the overarching multi-year storyline involving the Omenpaths.
