Provenance

Where it came from

Kinbinding was released as part of the Lorwyn block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, specifically within the Lorwyn expansion set. The card reflects the set's central thematic focus on the folklore of a world ruled by eternal autumn, drawing heavily on Celtic mythology and the whimsical yet melancholic nature of the fae and kithkin races.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Ron Spencer, who employed his signature visceral style to emphasize the ritualistic aspect of the card's effect. In the context of gameplay, the design sought to balance thematic flavor with functional control, representing the binding nature of communal magic within the kithkin society, and it was generally received by players as a staple utility tool within white-aligned control archetypes of the era.
