Where it came from
Kindred Summons was introduced to the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem through the Commander 2017 set, specifically within the Draconic Domination deck. The card was designed as a potent payoff for tribal-themed decks, reflecting the set's primary mechanical focus on rewarding players for building around a shared creature type. By allowing a player to reveal cards until they find a number of creatures matching the target creature type equal to the amount spent on the spell, it serves as a high-impact late-game engine for synergistic builds.
The art was provided by Izzy, a veteran illustrator known for a polished, ethereal aesthetic often found in high-fantasy card games. In this piece, the artist emphasizes the ritualistic and connective nature of the 'kindred' theme, utilizing warm, focused light to underscore the theme of calling allies from across the deck. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a powerful staple for tribal strategies, becoming a reliable inclusion for players prioritizing board presence and thematic consistency.
