Where it came from
Kindred Summons was introduced in the Commander 2017 set, which focused on tribal mechanics across four distinct preconstructed decks. Released as part of the 'Vampiric Bloodlust' deck, the card was designed to function as a powerful late-game payoff for tribal-themed strategies, allowing players to look at the top cards of their library and put any number of creatures sharing a type with their commander onto the battlefield.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work often leans into the high-fantasy aesthetic common in Magic: The Gathering. The design emphasizes the 'tribal' mechanical identity of the set, rewarding players for building decks with deep creature type synergy. Upon release, it was well-received by the Commander community for its high-ceiling potential, becoming a staple inclusion for decks relying on specific creature types like Vampires, Dragons, or Elves.
