Where it came from
Kindred Summons was originally printed as a rare in the 2017 Commander set and quickly became a staple for tribal-focused strategies due to its ability to swarm the battlefield with creatures sharing a chosen creature type. In 2023, the card was featured as part of the Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves drop, which aimed to bridge the lore between the iconic tabletop role-playing game and Magic: The Gathering.
The art for this iteration was created by Alayna Danner, a prominent illustrator known for her ethereal and detailed fantasy landscapes. By depicting a scene reflective of the Dungeons & Dragons cinematic aesthetic, the design focuses on themes of summoning and party unity. The card was well-received by players who appreciate the thematic cohesion between the two franchises and the unique visual identity provided by Danner’s signature style.
