Provenance

Where it came from

Kismet was originally introduced in the Legends expansion set in 1994, designed to mechanically enforce a slower pace of gameplay by forcing opponents' permanents to enter the battlefield tapped. When it was reprinted as part of the Classic Sixth Edition set in 1999, it retained its role as a disruptive white enchantment, serving as a staple for control-oriented strategies during the game's formative years.

The artwork for this Sixth Edition printing was provided by Kaja Foglio, a celebrated illustrator whose whimsical and storybook-influenced style became iconic during Magic's early era. Foglio's illustration depicts a surreal, dreamlike scene that reflects the card's function of imposing a sense of lethargy or inevitable fate upon the game state, marking a distinct visual departure from the more clinical or aggressive aesthetic found in many other cards of the period.
