Provenance

Where it came from

The Kraken token was released in 2014 as part of the accessory suite for the Commander 2014 deck series, a collection of five preconstructed decks focused on monocolored planeswalker commanders. This specific token was designed to accompany cards capable of generating Kraken creatures, providing players with a tangible representation of the power hitting the battlefield during multiplayer games.

The artwork for this token features a dramatic, menacing cephalopod, aligning with the creature-focused aesthetic that defines many high-impact tokens in the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. While individual artists for token cards are often credited within the broader set production, this design was intended to evoke the classic fantasy horror associated with deep-sea mythological beasts, serving as a functional tool for the Commander format's expansive card pool.
