Lore

Why it matters

This token serves as a functional representation of a creature summoned during gameplay, acting as a physical placeholder for the power of a summoned Kraken. While its status as a common item makes it widely accessible, it remains an essential piece for players looking to maintain a clear and thematic board state.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Kraken token was released in 2021 as part of the accessory suite for the Commander 2021 card set, a collection of five preconstructed decks focused on the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion. These tokens were produced by Wizards of the Coast to support gameplay mechanics, specifically for cards like 'Stormsurge Kraken' or other effects that generate creature tokens during a match. The inclusion of tokens in these decks serves as a functional utility, providing players with physical representations of summoned creatures to maintain board state clarity during games of Magic: The Gathering.

The design of the token reflects the aesthetic language of the Strixhaven set, emphasizing the mystical and academic themes of the plane. Illustrated by various artists commissioned by Wizards of the Coast, these tokens aim to balance high-fantasy creature design with the practical visibility requirements of a tabletop game. Like many token cards in modern sets, this piece was intended for wide distribution within Commander products, receiving a standard reception as a useful, utilitarian component of the broader Magic: The Gathering ecosystem.
