Where it came from
Kura, the Boundless Sky was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. This set marked a significant return to the plane of Kamigawa, shifting the aesthetic from traditional Japanese folklore to a high-tech cyberpunk interpretation. Kura represents one of the legendary dragon spirits of this reimagined world, serving as a mechanical successor to the original dragon cycle from the 2004 Champions of Kamigawa set.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized the set's distinct blend of neon-drenched urban landscapes and ancient spiritual motifs. The design intended to evoke both the celestial nature of the character and the digital, augmented reality themes pervasive in the Neon Dynasty setting. Upon its release, the card saw immediate play in competitive formats due to its powerful death trigger, which allows players to search for lands or create token creatures, reflecting the duality of the card's role as both a combat threat and a utility engine.
