Where it came from
Kura, the Boundless Sky was released in 2022 as part of the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty set for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant tonal shift for the game, revisiting the lore of the Kamigawa plane thousands of years after the original 2004 block, blending traditional Japanese mythology with a futuristic, cyberpunk aesthetic. The card represents one of the four legendary dragon spirits that serve as central figures in the plane’s evolving cosmology, reflecting a transition from ancient spirit-hood to a technologically integrated reality.
The card was illustrated by PINDURSKI, who utilized a vivid color palette and dynamic composition to depict the dragon’s mastery over the winds. In the game's design, Kura serves as a powerful green creature that provides utility upon its death, reflecting the cycle of life and sacrifice central to the set's green-aligned mechanics. It was well-received by players for its balance of high-impact gameplay and its role in reinforcing the set's core thematic tension between nature and artifice.
