The Great Forest

The Great Forest originated as part of the 2009 Planechase release, a multiplayer-focused expansion for Magic: The Gathering that introduced the 'planar' deck mechanic. This oversized card represents the plane of Llanowar, a setting deeply rooted in the game's earliest lore as a lush, primal home to the elf civilization. It was designed to function as a global environment card, altering gameplay for all participants by providing mana acceleration, effectively turning every land into a source of additional power to reflect the abundant nature of the forest.

The artwork for this piece was commissioned from artist Martina Pilcerova, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering. Her design focuses on capturing the overwhelming scale and verdant density of the setting, utilizing lighting to emphasize the ancient, untamed character of the woods. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base for its ability to speed up games and for the nostalgic resonance it held for those familiar with the history of Dominaria.
