Where it came from
Temp of the Damned was released in 1998 as part of the Unglued set, Wizards of the Coast's first foray into a silver-bordered expansion designed primarily for humor and casual play. The card was created during a period when the developers sought to subvert the standard rules of Magic: The Gathering through meta-commentary, parody, and mechanics that functioned outside the traditional play environment.
The illustration for the card was created by artist Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic contributors to the game's early visual language. The design, which pokes fun at the 'temperature' of the game's darker themes and the literal physical state of cardboard cards, was received as a lighthearted addition to the set, effectively capturing the whimsical and subversive tone that defined the Unglued project's cult-classic status.
