Where it came from
Leyline of Sanctity was released in the 2010 Magic 2011 core set as part of a cycle of five enchantment cards designed to provide powerful effects if drawn in the opening hand. The card was engineered to function as a strategic sideboard tool, specifically intended to prevent targeted discard and damage spells by granting the player hexproof. Its inclusion in the set reflected a design philosophy of providing players with accessible, high-impact answers to prevalent competitive strategies of the era.
The artwork for this particular iteration was created by artist Michael Komarck, who opted for an ethereal, celestial aesthetic that aligns with the 'Leyline' naming convention within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The design captures the sense of divine protection and isolation from external influence. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a definitive answer to aggressive hand-disruption decks, quickly becoming a staple in various formats where protecting the player from complex interactive spells is essential.
