The Library of Leng was originally released as part of the Alpha and Beta sets in 1993, later appearing in the Unlimited Edition, which was the first print run to feature a white border. Designed by Richard Garfield for the initial Magic: The Gathering base set, the card was intended to address the logistical challenges of discarding cards during gameplay, allowing players to retain resources that would otherwise be lost to the graveyard. Its illustration, created by Quinton Hoover, reflects the early aesthetic of the game with its intricate, dreamlike depiction of a vast repository of knowledge.
