Provenance

Where it came from

Lifelace was released as part of the Unlimited Edition set for Magic: The Gathering in 1993, shortly after the initial Alpha and Beta print runs. Created by Wizards of the Coast, the game was designed by Richard Garfield to combine the strategic depth of trading card games with a fantasy setting. The Unlimited Edition served to meet the unexpected public demand for the game, utilizing the same card list and artwork as the limited releases but featuring a white border to distinguish it from its predecessors.

The card’s illustration was provided by artist Dan Frazier, who contributed artwork to many of the game's early sets. Lifelace was designed as a thematic 'lace' card, which allows players to manipulate the color properties of permanent cards. While these early utility cards are often viewed today as niche in competitive play, they represent the experimental, flavor-driven design philosophy that characterized the foundation of the game during its inaugural year.
