Provenance

Where it came from

Lifelace was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Beta, the second printing of the Magic: The Gathering base set. Produced by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to meet the unexpected demand following the success of the initial Alpha release. It served as a corrected version of the game's foundation, featuring refined rules and aesthetic adjustments to the card frames and color saturation while maintaining the iconic white-bordered aesthetic that distinguishes the set from its predecessor.

The card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a central figure in early Magic art who was known for his distinctively romantic, flowing, and ethereal style. Designed as a common-rarity enchantment, Lifelace allows players to turn a permanent into a green card. It remains a classic example of the early game's experimental color-pie mechanics, reflecting a period when designers were exploring granular color interactions that would become less common in later iterations of the game.
