Provenance

Where it came from

Living Armor was released in 1994 as part of The Dark, the fifth expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Coming on the heels of Legends, The Dark was designed to explore themes of gothic horror and folklore, moving away from the high-fantasy tropes of previous sets. The expansion was produced during a period of rapid growth for the game, as Wizards of the Coast sought to flesh out the mechanical complexity and aesthetic diversity of their early card pool.

The artwork for Living Armor was created by illustrator Anson Maddocks, who was one of the original artists contributing to the game's early identity. His aesthetic, characterized by a distinct, ink-heavy style and often surreal or unsettling imagery, was instrumental in defining the visual language of the game's formative years. The card itself represents a piece of magical equipment that mechanically reinforces a creature's durability, a design approach typical of the era's focus on simple, thematic item cards.
