Merfolk Assassin

Released in August 1994, Merfolk Assassin debuted as part of The Dark, the fifth expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. The set was conceived during a period of rapid growth for the game, characterized by a shift toward more thematic, moody, and darker fantasy storytelling. Designed to evoke a sense of foreboding, the set introduced several creatures tied to specific lore-heavy environments, with the Merfolk Assassin serving as an uncommon creature that reflects the aquatic, ambush-style combat associated with the blue color alignment of the era.

The card’s artwork was provided by Dennis Detwiller, a notable illustrator and game designer who contributed several iconic pieces to the early history of the game.
