What it does

Defender (This creature can't attack.)

1 generic mana: Regenerate this creature.

Some fiendish mage had created a horrifying wall of living flesh, patched together from a jumble of still-recognizable body parts. As we sought to hew our way through it, some unknown power healed the gaping wounds we cut, denying us passage.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Living Wall card originates from the 1994 Summer Magic set, also colloquially known as the Edgar set after the shipping company involved in its distribution. This set was produced by Wizards of the Coast as a replacement for the print run of Revised Edition that had suffered from washed-out colors and printing defects. While the set is visually distinct due to its notably vibrant, high-contrast saturation, it was released with very little fanfare at the time, leading many cards from this print run to go unnoticed by the general public for years.

The card itself features artwork by Quinton Hoover, a prolific early contributor to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. Hoover’s design for Living Wall leaned into the surreal, organic horror common in early fantasy gaming, depicting a sentient, brick-like barrier. Despite its low power level in competitive gameplay, the card remains a point of interest for collectors due to the specific, deep color palette unique to the Summer Magic printing, which makes it a rare and distinct variant within the history of the game's early expansion sets.
