Provenance

Where it came from

Loafing Giant was released in the 2000 Invasion expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created by Wizards of the Coast, the Invasion set was notable for its focus on multi-colored cards and its narrative focus on the Phyrexian invasion of the plane of Dominaria. The card was designed as a common-rarity creature intended to populate the limited-format environment with a straightforward, if slightly inefficient, beefy green creature.

The illustration for the card was provided by artist Christopher Rush, one of the original illustrators for the game. His work on this piece conveys a whimsical, relaxed interpretation of a giant, contrasting with the high-stakes conflict depicted in the rest of the set. The card is generally regarded by the community as a functional piece of set filler, recognized more for its nostalgic representation of early-2000s card design than for its impact on competitive gameplay.
