Provenance

Where it came from

The Island card from the Invasion expansion, released by Wizards of the Coast in October 2000, was designed as part of a set centered on the narrative of a planar invasion by the artificial plane of Phyrexia. This specific card, bearing collector number 337, features artwork by Rob Alexander, a prolific illustrator known for his expansive and atmospheric landscape work within the Magic: The Gathering franchise. The design sought to evoke the bleak, war-torn aesthetic of the Dominarian landscape during the Phyrexian conflict, favoring a grounded, somber color palette that distinguished it from the more vibrant land designs of earlier sets.

Upon its release, the Invasion land cycle was well-received for its cohesive art direction and its contribution to the game's immersive storytelling. Rob Alexander's depiction of the Island reflects the set's broader theme of environmental degradation, moving away from traditional, idyllic tropical imagery to portray a more rugged, desolate terrain. The card remains a staple for players and collectors who appreciate the specific environmental visual language developed for the Invasion block, which marked a significant milestone in the game's evolving narrative arc.
