Locthwain Gargoyle

Locthwain Gargoyle was introduced in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering set Throne of Eldraine. The set drew heavily from European folklore and Arthurian legend, reimagining these tales through the lens of the game's unique multiverse. The card specifically represents the bleak, gothic aesthetic of the Locthwain region, a realm within Eldraine characterized by shadows and decay.

The card was illustrated by the artist Svetlin Velinov, whose work often focuses on imposing creatures and intricate fantasy environments. In this design, the gargoyle is depicted as a dormant, stone-like sentinel, reflecting its mechanical function as a creature that requires specific conditions to become active. It was designed as a functional common, intended primarily for the limited draft environment of the set, where its defensive nature serves as a tool for players to stall the game until they can stabilize.
