Where it came from
Released in October 2019, the Throne of Eldraine set marked a thematic departure for Magic: The Gathering, drawing heavy inspiration from Arthurian legend and classic European fairy tales. This Island, indexed as card number 255, serves as a basic land within the set, designed to anchor the narrative atmosphere of the plane through lush, folkloric aesthetics. The set was widely praised by the community for its cohesive art direction, which utilized a vibrant, high-fantasy color palette to evoke a sense of wonder and whimsy.
The artwork for this specific Island was created by Adam Paquette, a frequent contributor to the game known for his painterly style and atmospheric landscapes. In this iteration, Paquette focuses on the tranquil, misty qualities of an Eldraine woodland, emphasizing deep greens and blues to reflect the plane's enchanted nature. Like other lands in the set, it was designed to be aesthetically distinct from standard releases, ensuring that every element of the card—from the typography to the border treatment—contributed to the immersive storybook feel that Wizards of the Coast sought to achieve with this expansion.
