Provenance

Where it came from

The Locust Miser was released in 2005 as part of the Saviors of Kamigawa expansion, the third and final set in the Kamigawa block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed to round out the block's unique themes, which were heavily influenced by Japanese mythology and folklore. The card was crafted to support the 'hand size matters' mechanic, a defining characteristic of the set where players were rewarded for maintaining a large number of cards in their hand, or conversely, punishing opponents for having few.

Illustrated by artist Ittoku, the card depicts a spectral, insectoid creature consistent with the eerie, spirit-focused aesthetic of the Kamigawa setting. The design intent behind the Locust Miser was to provide a thematic, disruptive utility creature for black-aligned decks, forcing opponents to discard cards based on their hand size. Upon release, it was viewed as a niche tactical piece, appreciated by players who focused on discard-heavy control strategies and those drawn to the set's immersive, lore-driven card designs.
