Where it came from
The Locust Spray card was released as part of the Mystical Archive, a specialized subset within the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion set, Strixhaven: School of Mages. The Archive was conceived as a thematic celebration of magical spells across the history of the game, featuring iconic instants and sorceries from past sets reimagined with unique, academic-inspired artistic treatments. This particular card draws its visual identity from the distinct aesthetic of the Strixhaven campus, designed to mirror the refined, scholarly atmosphere of a prestigious magical university.
The artwork for this iteration was crafted to emphasize the destructive, organic nature of the spell, utilizing the high-contrast, Japanese-inspired aesthetic that defines the Mystical Archive’s alternate-art variants. By blending traditional magical iconography with the scholarly branding of the set, the design sought to bridge the gap between classic game mechanics and the narrative of Strixhaven. It was well-received by collectors for its stylized departure from standard card frames, serving as both a playable utility in game formats and a piece of collectible fantasy illustration.
