Lost Soul

Lost Soul was originally introduced as a common card in the Alpha and Beta sets of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, later appearing in the 1995 Fourth Edition base set as card number 145. It belongs to the game's earliest conceptual period, where cards often drew heavily from high fantasy tropes and gothic horror literature to establish the identity of the Black mana color alignment. The card was designed to function as a simple, low-cost creature, reflecting the game's initial focus on straightforward combat mechanics and resource attrition.

The illustration for the card, created by artist Anson Maddocks, captures a spectral, undead figure emerging from darkness, consistent with the gritty, hand-drawn aesthetic that defined early Magic artwork. Maddocks was one of the original core group of artists tasked with visual world-building for the game, utilizing a technique that emphasized eerie atmosphere over polished digital precision. While Fourth Edition marked a shift toward a standardized white-border format for core sets to distinguish them from expansion releases, the card's visual identity remained largely untouched from its original debut.
