Where it came from
Sunglasses of Urza originated in the early days of Magic: The Gathering, first appearing in the Alpha set of 1993. As an artifact intended to reveal hidden information, the card reflects the game's initial focus on high-fantasy utility and the thematic lore surrounding the legendary artificer Urza. Its inclusion in the Fourth Edition, released in 1995, served to maintain the presence of these early artifacts as the game began its transition from a niche hobby to a global phenomenon.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Dan Frazier, whose distinct, painterly style defined many of the game's most iconic early artifacts. Frazier’s design sought to evoke the aesthetic of ancient, mystical technology, grounding the card in the game's developing visual identity. While it remains a modest piece in competitive play, it is highly regarded among collectors for its role in establishing the visual language of the game’s formative years.
