Where it came from
Lovestruck Beast was released in 2019 as part of the Throne of Eldraine expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Drawing thematic inspiration from European folklore and Grimm’s Fairy Tales, the set introduced a 'storybook' aesthetic. This specific iteration, bearing the collector number 165s, is a promotional variant featuring the unique borderless art style that defined the set's premium offerings, intended to evoke the feel of an illuminated manuscript.
The illustration was rendered by artist Bram Sels, who sought to capture the duality of the creature—a hulking, melancholic guardian bound by a tiny, romantic token. The card mechanics were designed to reflect the classic trope of a beast redeemed by love, requiring the player to control a 1/1 creature to 'unlock' the beast’s ability to attack. It was well-received by the competitive community for its efficiency and became a staple in aggressive deck archetypes throughout its time in the Standard rotation.
