Provenance

Where it came from

Magical Hack was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set for Magic: The Gathering, the inaugural core set of the collectible card game designed by Richard Garfield. Produced by Wizards of the Coast, the game was created to provide a portable, strategic experience for players to enjoy between rounds of traditional tabletop gaming. The card itself represents the early experimental design phase of the game, where the rules regarding color identity and spell modification were still being tested through simple, versatile effects.

The card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, one of the most prominent artists during the early years of the game. Hoover’s style was characterized by a distinct, painterly approach that helped define the visual identity of early Magic. Within the meta-game of the time, the card was often viewed as a niche utility tool, allowing players to manipulate the mechanics of other cards. While it did not achieve the status of the more powerful power-nine artifacts, it remains a sought-after piece of gaming history due to its presence in the rare Alpha print run.
