Provenance

Where it came from

Magical Hack originated in the Summer Magic set, also colloquially known as the Edgar set, released in 1994. This limited print run was created to replace the initial Alpha and Beta stock of Magic: The Gathering, which had been depleted by unprecedented demand. Printed by Cartamundi, the set was distributed primarily through the Edgar Brothers in Europe, featuring subtle differences such as slightly darker card stock and distinct color saturation compared to the base sets.

The card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a central figure in the early aesthetic identity of the game. Hoover sought to capture a whimsical yet arcane atmosphere, employing a fluid, ink-heavy style that prioritized character expression. While Magical Hack is a functional card within the game's mechanics, the Summer Magic version has become a significant collector's piece due to its scarcity and the curious history of the set's inadvertent production differences, which often resulted in unique color shifts in the artwork.
