What it does
3 generic mana, tap: Tap target creature you control and target creature of an opponent's choice they control. Those creatures fight each other. (Each deals damage equal to its power to the other.)
The magus still hears the roar of the crowds. They're gone, but the will to compete remains.

Where it came from
Magus of the Arena was released in 2007 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Planar Chaos. The set was designed around the concept of a divergent timeline where color pie philosophies were shifted, allowing effects traditionally found in one color to appear in others. This card specifically functions as a creature-based homage to the iconic artifact Arena, translating the classic battle-oriented utility into a white-aligned creature permanent.
The artwork was provided by the illustrator Daren Bader, who has contributed to the game for decades. In designing the visual, Bader leaned into the high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the period, depicting a figure standing amidst a gladiatorial setting to evoke the sense of forced combat that the card represents. Upon its release, it was received as a flavorful, if niche, addition to white deck archetypes that sought to leverage creature removal through direct dueling mechanics.
