Provenance

Where it came from

Magus of the Bazaar was released in 2007 as part of the Planar Chaos set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was built on the premise of an alternate timeline, reimagining classic, powerful effects from the game's history and applying them to new creatures in different colors. This specific card was designed as a creature-based homage to the legendary Bazaar of Baghdad, a land card originally printed in 1993 that is widely considered one of the most powerful utility cards in the game's history.

The card was illustrated by the artist Pete Venters, who aimed to capture the essence of a mysterious merchant trading in arcane knowledge. The design translates the land's ability—allowing a player to draw and discard cards—into a creature, forcing players to manage combat and vulnerability in exchange for the card-filtering effect. While it did not reach the same competitive prominence as the original land it mimics, the card remains a notable example of the creative risks taken during the development of the Time Spiral block.
