Where it came from
Magus of the Balance was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion. The card serves as a thematic homage to the classic Magic: The Gathering card Balance, which is notorious for its restricted status in many formats due to its powerful board-resetting capability. By reimagining the effect as a creature, the design team opted to increase its mana cost and require a tap activation, creating a more interactive and balanced gameplay experience suitable for multiplayer formats.
The card features artwork by the illustrator Volkan Baga, known for his distinct style within the fantasy genre. The visual direction focuses on the imposing, arcane figure of the Magus, emphasizing the gravity of the equilibrium they maintain. Upon release, the card was received as a functional, tactical tool for white-aligned Commander decks, appreciated by players for providing a specialized reset button that rewards careful timing and strategic board state management.
