Magus of the Disk

Magus of the Disk was originally introduced in the 2007 set Planar Chaos as a creature-based homage to the iconic artifact Nevinyrral's Disk from the 1993 set Alpha. The design philosophy of the Magus cycle was to translate the effects of powerful, stationary artifacts into creature form, forcing players to account for summoning sickness and vulnerability to creature removal. This specific version was reprinted in the Commander 2020 set, specifically within the Arcane Maelstrom deck, to provide blue-green-red players with a recurring board-wipe utility that fits the themes of heavy creature play and artifact synergy found in the Commander format.

The artwork for the Magus of the Disk was created by artist Dan Dos Santos, who aimed to evoke a sense of cosmic weight and arcane instability. The illustration depicts the figure channeling the immense, destructive energy associated with Nevinyrral’s original artifact, rendered with a dramatic, painterly aesthetic that emphasizes the character's focused intensity. Upon its release in the original set, the card was well-received by players for its tactical utility and its nod to Magic: The Gathering history, serving as a functional, albeit more fragile, alternative to one of the most famous cards in the game's history.
