Where it came from
Magus of the Wheel was released in 2020 as part of the Commander 2020 product line, specifically featuring within the Timeless Wisdom preconstructed deck. The card is a member of the Magus cycle, a series of creatures introduced in the Time Spiral block designed to serve as creatures that mimic the effects of iconic, powerful artifacts or enchantments from Magic: The Gathering history. By translating the ability of the legendary Wheel of Fortune into a creature-based effect, the design team sought to provide players with a more interactive, albeit more fragile, way to reset hand states in the Commander format.
The artwork for this specific iteration was provided by illustrator Igor Kieryluk, who has been a prolific contributor to the game for many years. His interpretation of the character leans into the aesthetic of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths setting, which served as the thematic backdrop for the Commander 2020 decks. The design intent was to capture a sense of cosmic, cyclical power, balancing the explosive nature of the card's ability with the visceral, monster-heavy visual language established for the Ikoria plane.
