Where it came from
Magus of the Wheel was released in 2015 as part of the Commander 2015 set, specifically appearing in the 'Plunder the Graves' preconstructed deck. This card serves as a thematic homage to the iconic Magic: The Gathering card Wheel of Fortune, which was part of the Alpha set released in 1993. By reimagining powerful, historic effects as creatures, the Magus cycle allows players to utilize classic, high-impact abilities while adhering to the strategic constraints of the Commander format.
The artwork for the card was created by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent illustrator known for her work within the fantasy genre and her significant contributions to the Magic: The Gathering art catalog. In her design, Villeneuve captures the essence of a mystical figure manipulating a grand, celestial wheel, reflecting the card's function of resetting hands and refreshing resources. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base, particularly among those who value 'wheel' effects but prefer creature-based permanents that can be interacted with or reanimated.
