What it does

Flying (This creature can't be blocked except by creatures with flying or reach.)

Of royal blood among the spirits of the air, the Mahamoti Djinn rides on the wings of the winds. As dangerous in the gambling hall as he is in battle, he is a master of trickery and misdirection.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Mahamoti Djinn from the 1994 Summer Magic set, also referred to as Edgar, represents a significant chapter in the history of Magic: The Gathering. This set was intended to be a corrected reprint of the Revised Edition, but it was marred by numerous production errors and color inconsistencies, leading to the vast majority of the print run being destroyed by the publisher. The surviving cards from this set, which were never officially released for retail, have since become some of the most sought-after rarities in the hobby due to their scarcity and historical significance.

The card's artwork, originally illustrated by Jeff A. Menges, depicts the iconic Djinn in a style consistent with the game's early fantasy aesthetic. Menges's design for the creature aimed to capture an elemental, ethereal quality that defined the Blue color identity in early iterations of the game. While the artwork itself was repurposed from the Alpha and Beta sets, its inclusion in the Summer Magic collection highlights the technical challenges Wizards of the Coast faced during their early expansion, as the set served as a rare glimpse into the production struggles of 1994.
